Saturday Art School exhibition!

ARTHOUSE JERSEY & STANDARD CHARTERED

Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 February 2024, 10am to 4pm

ArtHouse Jersey and Standard Chartered are delighted to present a special exhibition curated by Saturday Art School students. This is taking place at Greve de Lecq Barracks from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 February, open 10am to 4pm each day. Saturday Art School is a free extra-curricular course available to secondary school students across the Island, kindly sponsored by Standard Chartered and delivered in partnership with ArtHouse Jersey, CYPES (Children, Young People, Education and Skills) and local artists.

During the Autumn term last year the workshops encouraged students to think about curation, how work is presented, as well as generating work from original source material. Ideas were revisited and explored through different materials and techniques each week. Participants were able to visit the ‘No Place Like Home’ exhibition at ArtHouse Jersey Capital House to see how different artworks can be put together when sharing a common theme. In the studio, students created collaborative drawings, created sculptures and mobiles as well as mixed media collage and stencil work. The workshops this term are building towards creating wearable art from mixed media and waste materials. Structured drawing and painting workshops will provide the foundations for students to develop and create their own 3D work that can be worn.

Saturday Art School supports students to work with materials and techniques that they may not have come across before. Although the sessions are structured they also enable space for self directed exploration which supports students to find their own creative voice. The sessions are led by artist educators who are able to share their own career progression and give insight into their working life. By getting involved in curating the exhibition students are able to learn new presentation skills which will support their development as practicing artists and broaden their understanding of potential roles within the arts.

Director of ArtHouse Jersey, Tom Dingle, said, “ArtHouse Jersey aims to nurture artists of the future by providing a range of opportunities throughout their journey and we’re delighted to be able to offer the chance to Saturday Art School students to curate their own unique exhibition next weekend. Being able to select, document, promote and exhibit work is important professional development for artists of all ages and we hope participants will find the experience enriching and enjoyable. As always, we would like to thank our valued sponsors Standard Chartered for their ongoing commitment to this project which helps break down barriers to arts activities for young people in Jersey and offers an exciting extra curricular setting for their talent and interest in the arts to flourish.”

Henry Baye, CEO Jersey, Standard Chartered, said, “The Saturday Art School students should feel very proud of the incredible artwork they’ve created that will now be on show for everyone in Jersey to enjoy. We’re delighted to support ArtHouse Jersey’s important work, which provides so much opportunity for young people on the Island to express and grow their talents.”

The Saturday Art School exhibition will take place at Greve de Lecq Barracks from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 February 2024 between 10am and 4pm.
